Tattoo Aftercare

After getting a tattoo, it’s crucial to ensure proper aftercare to promote healing and prevent infection. Here are some aftercare instructions:

1

We advise you to leave the tattoo bandage on for 2-3 days. If the bandage begins to come off prematurely or if there are any leaks or tears, remove the bandage immediately, do not try to reapply or tape down. Reach out to your artist to see if it needs to be replaced or if you can continue with regular aftercare.

NOTE: It is normal and common for plasma, a clear fluid that helps with the healing process, to accumulate under the bandage. As long as it is not leaking out, leave the bandage on. Do not attempt to puncture the bandage to remove the fluid.

2

Once it is time to remove the bandage, make sure your hands are clean to avoid introducing bacteria to the area. With washed hands, pull the edge of the bandage in a downwards motion, slowly and gently, similar to removing a command strip.

TIP: Removing the bandage in the shower under warm water can also minimize discomfort.

3

Clean the tattoo gently using mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water. Gently wash the tattooed area with your hands (no loofahs, washcloths or scrubbers). Pat it dry with a clean towel; avoid rubbing. Repeat 1-2 times a day.

4

After cleaning, allow the tattoo to air dry for a few minutes before proceeding with the aftercare routine.

5

After the tattoo has dried, apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment, (we recommend Hustle Butter) or a fragrance free lotion. Apply a thin layer over the tattooed area to keep it moisturized and promote healing. Be careful not to apply too much as the skin won’t be able to breathe, but also do not put too little or the skin will dry out. Repeat 3-5 times a day.

6

Your tattoo will go through changes as it heals. IT may or may not become rough, slightly scabby, flaky or shiny. Avoid picking or scratching. It’s normal for tattoos to itch as they heal, but resist the urge to scratch or pick at them. Doing so can remove scabs prematurely and affect the final outcome of the tattoo. Continue applying your aftercare throughout all stages of the healing process.

7

For the first 3-4 weeks, avoid soaking the tattoo. Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, soaking in bathtubs, rivers, lakes, pools etc. Excessive moisture can disrupt the healing process and increase the risk of infection. Showers are okay, but limit the time to 30 minutes or less.

8

For the first 3-4 weeks, keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight. Protect your tattoo from direct sunlight, especially during the healing process. UV rays can cause fading and damage to the tattooed skin.

9

Follow up with your tattoo artist: If you have any concerns or questions about your tattoo’s healing process, don’t hesitate to contact your tattoo artist for guidance. They have experience and expertise in proper aftercare and can provide personalized advice.
